Losing your car keys has a way of turning a normal day upside down. Whether they slipped out of a pocket, got left somewhere you can’t get back to, or just vanished, the panic is real — but the good news is that getting back on the road is usually more straightforward than it feels in the moment. Here’s what actually needs to happen, and what to have ready before you make the call.
Don’t panic — here’s what actually needs to happen
Getting a new key made isn’t guesswork. A mobile locksmith needs three things to cut and program a replacement: your vehicle’s make, model, and year; proof that you own the car (registration or title); and access to the vehicle itself, since the key has to be programmed to match your specific car’s system. Have your VIN handy if you can — it’s on your registration, insurance card, or the driver’s-side dashboard where the windshield meets the dash — since it tells us exactly which key type and programming your vehicle needs before we even arrive.
Why cost and time vary so much by key type
Not all car keys are built the same, and that’s the biggest factor in how long the job takes and what it costs:
Traditional metal keys (older vehicles, mostly pre-2000s) are the simplest case — cut the blade to match your lock, and you’re done. No programming involved.
Transponder keys have a small chip embedded in the key that communicates with your car’s immobilizer system. The key has to be cut to fit the lock and programmed to “talk” to your car’s computer — skip either step and the car won’t start even if the key turns.
Smart keys and fobs go a step further, handling keyless entry and push-button start over a wireless signal. These are the most involved to source and program, and pricing reflects that added complexity.

Dealer vs. mobile locksmith
Both can get you a working key, but the tradeoffs are real. A dealer often has to order a key from the manufacturer if they don’t stock it, which can mean days without a car. A mobile locksmith typically carries a wide range of key blanks and programming equipment on the truck, so in most cases we can cut and program a replacement on-site the same day — often within the hour — without you needing a tow or a ride to a dealership lot.

To cut and program your replacement key in one visit, have ready:
- Your vehicle’s year, make, and model (and VIN, if you have it)
- Proof of ownership — registration, title, or insurance card
- The car itself, since programming requires physically connecting to the vehicle
That’s it. No need to have the car towed anywhere or wait for a mail-order part in most cases.
